The ability of a machine to imitate intelligent human behavior is known as artificial intelligence (AI). Due to its capacity to simulate human intelligence processes that are managed by computer systems, artificial intelligence has numerous applications nowadays including AI-assisted technologies in teaching and learning foreign languages.

National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute”, Ukraine, refers to the vocational education and training system of the country. It provides learners with essential skills enhancing their employability, supporting their personal development and encouraging active citizenship. It is a complex of pedagogical and organizational and management measures aimed to ensure that individuals get knowledge, abilities and skills pertinent to a certain profession, develop their competence and skills, and general and professional culture. [1, p.1] The educational system is adapted to the conditions of martial law because of Russia’s aggression that started on 24 February 2022 [2, p.1].  Online classes at university save from shelling, bombing and blackouts of the offline. The educational process goes on with the Microsoft Teams apps in the online format with remote platforms for learning. IT technology in the form of a cloud-based team collaboration software offers core capabilities, including business messaging, calling, video meetings, and file sharing. It is the ultimate messaging app for an organization—a workspace for real-time collaboration and communication, meetings, file and app sharing, all in one place, in the open, accessible to everyone via desktop [3, p.1]. Some benefits of Online work provide opportunities for foreign language teachers and learners to practice their ability in four English skills: listening, reading, writing, speaking, and doing online learning, getting online references, and using multiple computer applications. Obtaining the latest information, translating, having opportunities to use multimedia presentations and demonstrate new teaching methods, practicing online quizzes or tests, improving the speed of answering questions, and test scores, learning additional foreign languages, and doing collaborative learning is encouraged by IT technology. Integrated language teaching and learning gives teachers a possibility of creating online quizzes and tests, and students’ answering questions more quickly. The quiz scores are seen within a few minutes after the test is ready. While watching movies, rehearsing, listening and speaking skills are trained if subtitles are provided. Students summarize what they have watched by speaking or writing it.  E-mailing provides students with more opportunities for writing. Speaking: students can discuss what they have watched in small groups. Listening: listening to news, movies, or interviews, learners become familiar with what native speakers say.  Reading: many websites provide news in foreign languages to read the information as soon as the news appears.  Multi-media presentation software is widely used at online lessons and conferences while presentations. Students speak a foreign language when presenting a topic. Efficiency: E-learning is a time-efficient and effective way of learning foreign languages under war circumstances. Artificial intelligence (AI) assists students in learning a new language more quickly and successfully by offering individualized learning, real-time feedback, adaptability, access to resources, and cost-effectiveness [4, p.1].

Today, there are many AI tools for learning foreign languages that offer a variety of approaches. Virtual tutors and conversation trainers, for example, Duolingo, announced an unprecedented expansion: 148 new language courses are created using generative AI, effectively doubling their content library in just one year [5, p.1]. Top 7 AI Tools for Language Teachers and Language Learners are mentioned in [6, p.1]. They are: ChatGPT for Teachers, Tweet for Teachers, Diffit for Teachers, Wordwall for Teachers, ChatGPT with Voice for Students, Mizou for Students, GetPronounce for Students, Quizlet for Students.

ChatGPT for Teachers is developed by OpenAI, it is a versatile AI large language model that can assist language teachers in a multitude of ways. It’s capable of generating lesson plans, creating engaging learning materials, creating rubrics, generating feedback and simulating conversation partners for language practice.

Lesson Planning: Input topics or learning objectives, and ChatGPT can generate detailed lesson plans, complete with activities and discussion questions.

Material Creation: Generate reading passages with accompanying comprehension and vocabulary activities, writing prompts, conversation starters, questionnaires, information gaps – anything you can think of – tailored to your students’ proficiency levels.

Q&A: Use ChatGPT to answer students’ questions about grammar, vocabulary, and language usage, providing instant, detailed explanations. When using ChatGPT, providing detailed prompts and customised instructions is crucial for getting the most effective and relevant responses. Detailed prompts help the AI understand the context and specific requirements of your request, leading to more accurate and useful outputs. For example, instead of simply asking ChatGPT to “create a lesson plan,” you might specify: “Create a lesson plan for an intermediate ESL class focused on the past perfect tense, including objectives, activities, and assessment methods.” This level of detail helps ensure that the AI generates content that meets your exact needs. Similarly, when seeking explanations or examples, providing context or specifying the complexity level can result in more tailored and relevant responses. Clear instructions and context make ChatGPT a powerful tool in your teaching arsenal.

Example prompts:

Prompt: “Create a 45-minute lesson plan for an intermediate ESL class focused on the past perfect tense. The lesson should include a warm-up activity, a detailed explanation of the tense, interactive practice activities, and a short assessment at the end. Also suggest homework.”

Prompt: “Write a 300-word reading passage suitable for advanced ESL learners about the impacts of climate change on coastal cities. Include at least five new vocabulary words for the students to learn, and provide a brief glossary for these words.”

Prompt: “Explain the difference between ‘few’ and ‘a few’ with at least three example sentences for each term. The explanation should be suitable for intermediate ESL students.”.

ChatGPT for students with voice integration is a game-changer for language learners, offering an interactive way to practice speaking and listening skills. This tool allows students to engage in spoken conversations with an AI, simulating real-life dialogue situations. How to Use It - Speaking Practice: Students can practice their speaking skills by having conversations with ChatGPT, receiving immediate feedback on pronunciation and grammar. Listening Comprehension: Engage with spoken responses to improve listening skills and understand natural language use. Role-playing: Simulate various scenarios, such as ordering food in a restaurant or asking for directions, to build confidence in using English in everyday situations.

How can AI tools (e.g. ChatGPT) support language teaching?  ChatGPT helps you internalize language patterns and use them more naturally in conversation. Example Prompt: "ChatGPT, can you help me learn common French phrases for daily conversations and explain their meanings?"

Officially, OpenAI states that ChatGPT supports 58 languages. However, through testing and user reports, it's clear that its capabilities extend far beyond that. It's imperative to emphasize that AI is a potent tool that may be employed to enhance language acquisition for students of all ages and proficiency levels. AI-assisted language learning has emerged as a powerful tool to enhance language learning, offering new and effective pathways to support learning languages in Europe. Talkpal is a GPT-powered AI language teacher boosting one’s speaking, listening, writing, and pronunciation skills. AI has supported language teaching and learning with studies showing that AI can support language-specific skills.

Conclusion. AI is essential in language teaching and learning, being a meaningful tool for both teachers and students. Interactive language programs and learning platforms allow students to practice a foreign language in virtual situations, and receive feedback. The use of artificial intelligence makes it possible to create adaptive learning platforms that individually adjust to the needs and abilities of each learner. Students learn a foreign language according to their needs and pace. The use of AI makes it possible to identify the optimal teaching methods for each student based on their individual abilities, learning styles, and interests. This teaching approach helps learners master the material more effectively, ensures maximum adaptation to their needs, and provides more successful results in learning foreign languages. AI is becoming a crucial component of contemporary educational systems since it has the potential to improve teaching approaches, personalize learning experiences, and accelerate administrative processes. Students can learn languages more effectively with the aid of AI. [7, p.1] It is proved by the experience of teaching foreign languages at the National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute”, Ukraine. Ukrainian foreign language learners employ student-centered learning with the benefits of technology integration in language learning that can be maximized to improve the learners’ proficiency. The feasibility of information and communication technology (ICT) as a teaching and learning tool is proved by practice. The use of artificial intelligence makes it possible to create adaptive learning platforms that individually adjust to the needs and abilities of each learner [8, p.1].

A lot of works proves this fact: Study [9, p.1] measures the effectiveness of artificial intelligence apps in English as a Foreign Language classroom environment. Work [10, p.1] shows that college English immersive context teaching combined with constructivism theory and VR technology can indeed improve China students' progress in English. In [11, p.1] the authors report on the teaching procedure of Grammarly - an online grammar checker tool in Writing 2 classes. The purpose of study [12, p.1] is to investigate students' perceptions of using Artificial Intelligence mobile applications to improve English listening skills. Article [13, p.1] delves into the implementation of AI-based mobile learning in ELT for EFL learners.

But language learning is a “human thing”. AI can’t replace language learning itself, and it is unlikely that technology will ever fully replace instructors.
